A God of War: Ragnarok player has discovered a secret Marvel cameo hidden within the game, and I think we all may have missed it.

Santa Monica Studio is no stranger to hiding secret cameos and easter eggs within its games, particularly those which reference other popular IPs.

For example, Kvasir's Poems in God of War: Ragnarok each house references to other Sony games like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us.

Another reference in the game has seemingly gone unnoticed by many fans in the years since launch, referencing a popular Marvel character who debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014.

As posted on the God of War Reddit page earlier this week, one player currently exploring Vanaheim in Ragnarok came across a reference to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

God Of War Ragnarok's Secret Marvel Cameo Has Gone Unnoticed By Some Players

Cruising down one of Vanaheim’s rivers in the boat, the player discovered a tree just located off to the side near a large cliff with a face carved into it which looks like Groot’s face.

It also has a similar head shape and “hair” which resembles the popular Marvel character, as well as a little scarf to keep him warm.

Naturally, some players who were also unaware of the reference have voiced their confusion at this seemingly gone over their heads for years.

“I have like 300 hours in Ragnarok and have literally never noticed this, only the baby trees,” reads one comment in the same thread.

Marvel Studios

I must admit, even after completing God of War Ragnarok from start to finish, I can’t say I’d noticed this either. But that’s a fun one regardless, as it’s pretty clear Sony Santa Monica Studio has got quite a lot of Marvel fans.

It does make me wonder what other types of cameos and references could be hidden inside God of War Ragnarok that may have gone unnoticed for years.

Game developers love hiding secrets inside their games for players to find, and sometimes those secrets can go years without being found.

I mean, look at Red Dead Redemption 2's mystery trail from December, or the fact that Stardew Valley still has a hidden secret that nobody has found after ten years.
