Fallout 4 Update Confirmed by Bethesda, Adds What We All Want

Bethesda has confirmed a new update for Fallout 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, and it’s the one we’ve all been waiting for.

Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition launched on Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this week, and reception to it has been pretty positive.

While some players have regarded the port as inferior to the one available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, many are also calling it an excellent version of the 2015 game.

Regardless, there were some features that fans expected from the port that didn’t end up making it in the final release. As a result, Bethesda has confirmed they’ll be coming in a post-launch patch.

As announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Bethesda, Fallout 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 will be getting DLSS support in a future patch.

What Is DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) And Why Is It Good For Fallout 4?

DLSS is short for “Deep Learning Super Sampling”, which essentially allows a game to run at lower resolutions and then upscale it to higher resolutions using machine learning to fill in the blanks.

This means a game could run in resolutions below 4K, like 1080p or even 480p, and then have it be upscaled to 4K, allowing you to get the performance benefits of lower resolutions with the visual fidelity of higher ones.

However, it’s not a perfect system as there’ll be a small amount of blur and artifacts on-screen. Running in native 4K will always be better, but some games simply can’t run at those resolutions without major performance hitches. That’s why DLSS is a good compromise.

Fallout 4 already has several performance modes on Switch 2, including a 30fps mode and a 60fps mode. So the fact it’s doing this without DLSS is pretty impressive.

“It's already brute forcing 2x the frame rate of PS4 with better IQ with no DLSS? This port even if not perfect surpassed all my expectations,” reads one comment on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page.

While the reception to DLSS has been pretty positive, fans are also hoping Bethesda adds mouse control support and gyro aiming to the game.

As Fallout 4 is a first-person shooter, it makes sense to add support for this where possible.

Even outside of aiming, mouse controls would work wonders for navigating the various menus on your Pipboy, while gyro could be fun for the settlement building feature available in Fallout 4.
