Fallout 4 free overhaul makes game's opening better than ever

Much better

A new Fallout 4 overhaul has massively improved the game’s opening sequence.

Fallout 4’s prologue is one of the most iconic moments in the game, and it was certainly quite a shock to us all when we first played the game back in 2015.

There was something quite unexpected about finding out we’re actually playing a pre-war character who gets frozen and sent to the future. Philip J. Fry, eat your heart out.

Likewise, the first few hours of your time in the Commonwealth wasteland can be just as captivating, especially when you’re sidetracked by all the things to do.

But it can be a little frustrating to be constantly pushed towards a goal when you’re trying new characters. After all, we have a massive world to explore, stop taking us in one direction.

The new mod “Search for the main quest” remedies this a little, overhauling the When Freedom Calls quest to give you a little break and a chance to explore the wasteland without necessarily being pushed towards Diamond City.

As the mod author states, the quest has historically been criticised for aggressive hand-holding and awkward pacing. It basically overloads a bunch of plot details onto you quite early on, when you’d rather just be spending that time exploring.

The mod reworks how you interact with Mama Murphy, removing certain lines which reveal key story beats, allowing them to be done later.

This also delays the main story quest Jewel of the Commonwealth by not automatically activating it. Instead, you get a Diamond City map marker but it’s down to you to explore and find your way forward.

Ultimately, it leaves the early hours of the story as more of a mystery, allowing you to pick up the pieces for yourself and discover it naturally.

Of course, if you’re replaying the game then this won’t matter as much, but it’s a good one for those who are returning to the game after a long hiatus, and want to use a fresh save.

The mod also makes a few gameplay tweaks like reducing minigun ammo and changing the Power Armor found in the quest to no longer be a full suit.

So it should avoid the problem of giving you too many overpowered weapons at the beginning.
