A new free demo that’s just hit Steam is a mix of Skyrim and Stardew Valley, and you can play it now.

Runic Winds is an upcoming action RPG played from a top-down perspective, with clear influences coming from games like Stardew Valley and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

It’s a game where you must perfect different aspects of rune magic, which is done via combat, exploration, and dungeon crawling.

Ancient runes, forgotten history, and quiet mystery lays the foundation of the world you explore, where each region is interconnected and the dungeons are littered throughout each one. This gives it a bit of a classic Zelda appeal, too.

The challenges involved in each dungeon run are designed to feel rewarding, where your timing and pattern recognition becomes crucial. It’s here where you learn different rune-based spells to become part of your arsenal.

A Free Demo For Runic Winds Is Available Now On Steam

In case you fancy checking out Runic Winds, there’s a free demo available now to grab from Steam, which you can find here.

The demo features the opening chapter of the game, giving you a small taste of what the full game offers. This includes a full dungeon with a boss encounter at the end, as well as many secrets to find too.

Developer GeccoBot says that this demo is a “focused introduction” to the various systems and mechanics that are present in the full version of Runic Winds.

“This demo is so much and more, I really enjoyed the music, combat and puzzles - There appears to be a lot to this game and I cannot wait to check it all out,” reads the one review the demo has earned so far, giving it a thumbs up indicating that they recommend it.

As for when the full game releases, there’s no word on that yet from GeccoBot. The Steam store page simply says that the date is “To be announced”, so we won't know yet.

The blurb on Runic Winds reads: "As Maria awakens with no memory of her past, players slowly piece together the truth of the world and its runes. The story unfolds subtly, rewarding curiosity and attention rather than exposition.

"Runic Winds is designed for players who enjoy learning systems, overcoming challenges through understanding, and discovering worlds with intention."
