In 1993, DOOM revolutionised the games landscape with its mature tone and leagues of demons to squash in a classic FPS.

In a surprising 2025 twist, the original game and its sequel, DOOM II, have received mod support, bringing multiplayer to the iconic DOOM games.

DOOM: The Dark Ages will release later this year and bring more carnage.

The mod system is available on all platforms, even the Nintendo Switch, and will allow players to not only set up multiplayer lobbies, but swap to new weapons and skins from the community creators.

Bug fixes accompany the update, but that’s small fry compared to the wealth of new content available via mods.

Bethesda and Nightdive Studios have updated the game to allow for these mods to be used in multiplayer matches in a console first.

This comes after last year's updates that brought an additional chapter and mod support for the single player campaigns.

This is a great way to build up hype for the franchise that will be getting a new instalment this year in DOOM: The Dark Ages.

While the more modern reboots are rated as some of the best action shooter in recent generations, the original games still hold up to this day.

Of course, there are parts of DOOM and DOOM II that pale in comparison to the chaos of the modern versions, but each stands as a moment in gaming history.

With the addition of comprehensive mod support, it will bring a new lease of life to these iconic titles.

If you want to mess around with a community created weapon, or try out a great new map, you’ll be able to, not just on your own but with friends.

It’s also great to see consoles getting more mod support to bring in a parity with PC counterparts and let others enjoy the imagination of creators.
