Grab this banging freebie

Sometimes, that RPG itch we all get, can only be scratched by something properly old school, with the action and mechanics taken back to basics, and this latest Steam freebie is exactly that.

Modelled on the retro gems of Dragon Quest and the early Final Fantasy games, this Steam freebie will be perfect for those looking for an RPG throwback.

EXCALIBURAIN!! is a pixel RPG that looks to take things back to when the genre was a lot more simple, and not overly stuffed with complex stories or deep mechanics.

A new spin on the legend of Arthur, with a style that screams 1990s SNES, this RPG is completely free to grab on Steam, right now, and you can keep it forever.

The story begins, “On the first day, the Holy King created the heavens, and the Demon King created the earth.”

From here, you’ll be tasked with forming a party of heroes to seek out holy relics, one of which is the iconic Excalibur.

Using 11 different characters, all with unique jobs, you can play whatever role suits your style.

Featuring classic turn-based combat, and a beautifully simple UI that brings back memories of Dragon Quest, this RPG is perfect for fans of the genre, and the reviews show this.

“Best free RPG I have ever played!” says one player in their positive review of the game.

Another reviewer notes this is, “a very fun homage to the NES JRPGs that forged the genre,” and carries on with, “This game exceeded my expectations, especially since it's a free game on Steam.”

Certainly sounds worthy of anyone’s time, and it apparently plays well on the Steam Deck for those who want to play on the move.

With plenty of positive reviews, and lots of visual charm, coming in at around 10 hours of play, this is a short and wonderful adventure.
