Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake might have a promising rival, that’s been hailed as a “true AAAA pirate experience.”
Sure, to say that any game is a “AAAA experience” might be a bold claim and straight out of the Ubisoft playbook, but if this upcoming online pirate RPG plays as well as it looks, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag fans are in for a treat.
In recent months, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the rumoured remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, an entry that is considered to be the best game in the series. However, those rumours were recently confirmed by Ubisoft, and we’re all set for an official Black Flag remake reveal later this month.
While we wait for Ubisoft to reveal Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced (its official name), explorers of the seven seas might want to check out this rival online RPG that was only just released today.
“Embark on a PvE survival adventure in the Age of Piracy. Fight on land and sea, solo or with friends. Build, craft and explore a vast open world filled with dark secrets,” reads the synopsis of Windrose. “Master soulslite combat and take on challenging bosses, command your ship and plunder unspoken treasures!”

To be honest, after watching its promising gameplay trailer, Windrose looks every bit the online pirate RPG that Ubisoft hoped the ill-fated Skull and Bones would be.
Windrose will not only allow you to explore the seven seas with your pirate ship and motley crew, but it also features a crafting system that will likely please fans of Rust and Valheim, as well as having fun combat, nice visuals and plenty of activities that should keep you entertained for months on end.
“Amazing that the Windrose Crew studio of like 15 people can make a better Skull and Bones than Ubisoft without thousands of employees and billions of dollars. This is what a AAAA game should look like,” declared Anakin Skywalker (who may or may not be the real Anakin).
“I loved the demo and couldn’t wait for the game to be released. It’s far superior to the ‘game’ made by Ubisoft,” said ReGheAu. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the direction this game takes, because it seems to have a very promising future. Fair winds and following seas, fellow pirates!”
“Rum, beer, quests, and mead, these are the things that a pirate needs,” wrote FlintlockLuke.
“Finally! I've been dying for a pirate game I can actually enjoy! Just started playing and haven't found any negatives that usually pop up in most early access games; it can only get better from here,” claimed Timarchie.
As mentioned by the last Steam user comment above, Windrose is currently in its early access phase, so you may encounter bugs and some features may be missing. That being said, hopefully, all the kinks should be ironed out in the months ahead.
At the time of writing, there is no word on Windrose coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch 2. So, as of right now, it will remain a PC exclusive available on Steam and Epic Games Store.
