Steam co-op freebie is a hysterical alternative to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced

An upcoming Steam co-op game is like REPO set aboard a dangerous pirate ship, and it's jolly-good fun.

One of Steam’s upcoming co-op games is a hilarious alternative to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, in case Edward Kenway's gruelling pirate journey is too serious for your liking.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced marks the glorious return of the best Assassin’s Creed game (yes, even better than Assassin’s Creed II).

However, it’s not for everyone. Many have taken issue with Ubisoft laying off its Barcelona studio after a successful launch, flooding the game with microtransactions, and others are even arguing the original just feels better to play.

Those are all fair criticisms, but something we’re personally missing is the old multiplayer mode. Fortunately, Last Pirates: Die Together has a free demo with perfect timing.

Last Pirates: Die Together takes notes from classic ‘friendslop’ games like Peak, Content Warning and REPO especially. The game looks like a REPO clone but with a nautical twist, as it follows you and your friends looting pirate ships filled with shiny treasures, but also dangerous monsters.

The visuals alone should convince you that this a goofy game that shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Your colourful bean-like avatars have long, wiggly arms designed to scoop up anything that isn’t nailed down, and like REPO the facial expressions are always good for a laugh.

You can even unwind with a game of cards after a successful, or unsuccessful heist, something you can’t even do in the latest Assassin’s Creed game.

Of course, the game is only as good as the crew you’re playing with, so if you’re a solo-gamer or only have one friend to play with, this game might not be for you.

However, if you can rustle up a team, you’re more than welcome to try the free demo which is out now on PC via Steam.

The full game is yet to release, but a launch is scheduled for August 18 exclusively for PC. There’s no word on whether it’ll get a console port later down the line.

It’s a ‘Friendslop’ future

Weirdly, console gamers have been seriously missing out on these viral co-op titles, though action is being taken to rectify that.

Xbox for instance has had a couple of wins, with RV There Yet? joining the Xbox Game Pass line-up. There’s also a horror game on the way about defending a petrol station from things that go bump in the night.

There are plenty of other examples, but none of the heavy-hitters like Peak, REPO and Lethal Company have made the jump from PC yet.

Even the latest games taking over TikTok like MECCHA CHAMELEON are out of reach for console owners, when they’d make a killing if Xbox or PlayStation swooped in to help with publishing.

Perhaps that’s the kicker though. Would these indie co-op experiences suffer by being on so many different platforms? Maybe the real charm of these games is how they’ll run on even the most basic PC setups.
