An upcoming open world game now has a free demo available, and we’d say it’s perfect for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag and Valheim players.

We’re still waiting on that rumoured Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake to drop, but with Ubisoft going through a bit of a rough patch right now, it looks like that’s been pushed back.

In the meantime, those wanting an authentic pirate experience may want to check out some other games that have been inspired by the theme.

One game in particular is Windrose, an upcoming open world game from Windrose Crew that lets you set sail on the high seas and engage in a little bit of swashbuckling.

Formerly called Crosswind, the game allows for PvE gameplay similar to Sea of Thieves.

As the developer teases, Windrose features the classic “build, craft, survive” formula that is seen in many modern open world games, except that this unfolds across both land and sea.

On land, you focus on building, crafting, exploration, and gradual progression, establishing footholds on different islands and expanding them into outposts.

When setting sail, the game turns a bit more action-focused, where you raid ships, board enemy vessels, and plunder their goods.

Windrose Will Appeal To Fans Of Both Valheim And Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Windrose has a demo available now if you’re so inclined to check it out, featuring around “4–6 hours of gameplay”, which features the first three islands of the archipelago and some early quests.

It’ll be a good chance to get a feel for the game, including experiencing all the core mechanics that will be present in the full game. However, there are a few limitations.

For example, dedicated servers are not supported in the demo, with co-op only available through player-hosted sessions. Also, be aware that progress does not carry over from the demo into the full game.

“Wow what a fantastic game played from beginning to end in 10+ hours non stop. Lots to do in only the Demo. Can't wait for this to come out,” reads one positive review on the Steam page.

“Extremely solid first impressions. Instantly fun to play,” reads another review, also sharing a positive rating.

The paid version of Windrose does not have a release date yet. It’ll be launching into Early Access when it does though, with more features that have been expanded from the demo that should entice players.
