Ubisoft Cancels 6 Games, But This 18-Year-Old Forgotten Sequel Survived

It's beyond belief!

It’s been a bit of a turbulent week for Ubisoft.

After spending over half-a-decade in development, and reportedly being passed from one developer to the next, the remake of 2003’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was cancelled.

The other five cancelled Ubisoft games weren't brought to light, but some fear that the Splinter Cell remake stands a good chance of facing the chopping block. As a big fan of the series, I hope that’s not true.

Furthermore, as a result of the six Ubisoft cancellations, it’s been reported that the rumoured remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was to be revealed next month, but has now potentially been pushed back a year.

In 2008, Ubisoft teased Beyond Good & Evil 2. It was then properly revealed nine years later in 2017, and a new trailer was released the following year. However, we’ve not heard much else about the sequel, so it might be safe to assume that it’s ventured into the dreaded developmental hell.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Broke an Unwanted Record

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been in production for so long that in 2022, it broke the Guinness World Record for being the lengthiest game in development, a crown once owned by Duke Nukem Forever.

At the time of writing, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been in production for a whopping 18 years! This absolutely puts Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls VI to shame, which was revealed at E3 2018 (an event that no longer exists).

Yet, despite nearly two decades in production, according to video game journalist and industry insider, Tom Henderson, Beyond & Good Evil 2 is still in Ubisoft’s plans and was not among the six cancelled games.

Following a tweet earlier in the week claiming that Beyond Good & Evil 2 has survived the “purge”, Henderson updated his followers on X (formerly Twitter) to report that Ubisoft confirmed that the game is still in active development.

“Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains a priority for us in the context of our strategy centred around open world adventures," said a spokesperson.”

“It's strange because they've been too quiet about this game, and it's not like it's a very successful IP or going to be a bestseller at launch,” replied 1989Nax, making a very valid point.

“If they can turn it into an RPG with choices/consequences, they may have something. The world and characters have a lot of potential. They just have to do it right,” suggested bmuny101.

It would be nice to get a proper update from Ubisoft regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2. Perhaps we can keep our fingers crossed for Summer Game Fest or Gamescom this year.

As always, we'll keep you posted when we learn more about this ever-developing story regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2.
