Xbox Game Pass now includes a side-splitting friend-slop game I can't wait to play again

Xbox Game Pass boasts one of the cheekiest friend-slop games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, even though it was somewhat ruined by one of its most pointless updates.

The friend-slop genre has really taken off in the last year, thanks to games like Peak, R.E.P.O, Content Warning, and more.

It’s been nice to see, as for the longest time, it felt like fun, silly co-op games were a dying art. Games such as It Takes Two kept couch co-op alive but seemingly had to adapt with deeper narratives and more varied gameplay mechanics.

However, games like RV There Yet? prove modern co-op games don’t need to be overcomplicated, they just need to make you laugh with your friends.

RV There Yet? has crashed into Xbox Game Pass, and I hope it never leaves

Simply put, RV There Yet? is a co-op survival and driving game about you and your friends escaping Mabutts Valley. It’s a treacherous collective of dense foliage, treacherous mountain roads, and territorial wildlife.

After scavenging for supplies from empty log cabins and deserted campsites, you and your crew will take a rip from your cigarettes, down a few cans of beer, and set out in your RV.

One player drives, whereas the others help navigate, either by checking the map for which route to take or scouting ahead so you don’t accidentally drive off a cliff. Plenty of obstacles will crop up along the way, like collapsed bridges, steep cliff walls, and trees or boulders that block your path.

I played this with some friends one evening, and there was a lot to take in, but we quickly got up to speed and were making good progress until we all got mauled by a bear.

The comedy of RV There Yet? comes in those unpredictable moments, like when one of my friends was attempting to direct the RV across a bridge, not realising that as they walked backwards, they were traipsing closer to a gap in the planks.

When that aforementioned bear attacked, I was so startled that I hit the accelerator, which sent the RV careening into one of my fellow survivalists as they attempted to flee the enraged animal.

Completing a long stretch of our journey and safely arriving at a checkpoint felt rewarding, but because of the hilarity that’d often ensue, failure never felt frustrating.

What was frustrating was the realisation that the Xbox-to-PC crossplay was only possible with PC players also using Xbox Game Pass. Crossplay with Steam users isn’t currently supported.

However, once we overcame that hurdle by switching platforms around, it didn’t stop us from enjoying the scenic views of Mabutts Valley and all the dangers within.

Again, it’s a simple game with a simple premise and even simpler gameplay mechanics, but it’s so fun.

RV There Yet? suits a casual playstyle and provides ample opportunity for both giggly fun and locked-in urgency.

Hopefully, its crossplay capabilities get expanded to more platforms, but in the meantime, it’s a charming co-op game that you simply must load up with a few friends. You'll likely fare better than we did…
