Pokémon fans roast 'hilarious' new evolution for Gen 1 'mon

We heard you like wings

Yesterday’s Pokémon Presents revealed new footage of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with a look at the latest evolution for fan-favourite, Dragonite.

Dragonite, the third stage in the evolution chain starting with Dratini, will now have a Mega Evolution as part of the new game, and after we got a look at the design, Pokémon fans quickly began roasting it.

It’s easy to see why, very little imagination seems to have gone into the new look, with The Pokémon Company and Game Freak just chucking a pair of wings on its head and pretty much calling it done.

One would assume that the wings are supposed to reflect the look of Dragonair, but with them sprouting from the top of its head, they look like a bad photoshop.

And the thing is, Dragonite still has its old wings sitting uselessly on its back!

Over on Reddit, fans can’t hold in their critique of the design.

“I'm sorry, but wings on wings is hilarious,” said crobat3.

“People asked for it to look more like Dragonair. Game Freak delivered,” comments Gregamonster in reply.

It’s the wings that have most fans rolling on the floor, because they just look so preposterous and goofy.

“Maybe it'll grow on me, but man I'm really not liking those head wings,” says darkrailblader.

“It hurts to look at it,” echoes another Redditor further into the thread.

I’d like to think that this went through several iterations of design, but it really does feel like they went with the first one the intern picked.

“Surely they could've done something better than THIS, LMAO,” exclaims Pick_Boring.

Fans had been eagerly awaiting more Mega Evolutions, not only because they amp up the Pokémon in-game, but because it’s a chance to have more fun with the designs.

This player sums up their feelings by noting, “We shouldn't have asked them for more megas, this is our punishment.”
