There were plenty of shocking announcements during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, including news on the upcoming Super Mario Movie sequel, and details of the plumber’s 40th anniversary.
However, the most shocking revelation of all was the unveiling of the new Virtual Boy hardware that allows players to insert their Switch or Switch 2 into the unit to play the classic games as they were meant to be experienced.
The original launch of the Virtual Boy was a disaster for Nintendo, as the console gave users horrible migraines and feelings of nausea.
That’s not stopping them bringing it back for new players to experience through Nintendo Switch Online, but the negative and muted reception might be all too familiar for Nintendo.

“It's so random. If this was mentioned in a direct close to April 1st I'd assume it is a joke,” comments one fan over on Reddit.
The failures of the original hardware is not lost on Redditors, with one saying, “Giving a whole new generation of kids headaches.”
In the decades since launch, the Virtual Boy has become somewhat of a meme and a joke at this point, so it’s odd to see Nintendo lean into it, literally.
“30 years after its monstrous flop, they’re selling Virtual Boys again! Nintendo is made up of a bunch of lunatics,” exclaimed another Reddit user.

“Oh heck yes, exactly what nobody asked for!” replied a fan who seems to be expressing what most are thinking.
With only 14 games ever released for the console, this is going to be even more niche than Alarmo, which was also a weird Nintendo choice.
Many fans are wondering why this wasn’t a thing on the 3DS, you know, the console that had native 3D capability.
This last Redditor sums it up brilliantly, saying, “They've done it, lads. They made something more absurd than the original Virtual Boy.”
