From next year, a redesigned version of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be shipped to market, but exclusively in Europe only.
We’re almost one year on from the launch date of the Nintendo Switch 2.
It arrived on the scene on 5 June 2026 and has brought with it some fantastic exclusives, including the likes of Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Pokopia.

There are plenty more in the pipeline, including The Duskbloods, Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders, and more.
What you might not be aware of is that a revised version of the Nintendo Switch 2 is exclusively set to launch in Europe from 18 February 2027.
As reported by Nintendo Life, this new version won’t alter the external design of the console but instead features an internal revision.
That’s because the pre-existing Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t meet a new rule set by the European Union.
It stipulates that consumers must be able to replace batteries in electronic devices themselves which, at the moment, you cannot with the Nintendo Switch 2.
The battery is contained in a compartment that cannot be easily opened.
Newer versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 in Europe will be identifiable thanks to a unique model number and ‘OSM’ code on the packaging.
“Like the WEEE Directive, the Batteries Regulation aims to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacture, distribution, use, disposal and recycling of batteries and rechargeable batteries,” Nintendo posted.
“In doing so, it forbids the supply of batteries and rechargeable batteries with certain hazardous metal content and sets out requirements for batteries' labelling, safe removal from appliances, collection and recycling.
“Nintendo products are fully compliant with these requirements, and Nintendo cooperates fully with authorised regional institutions to facilitate the proper collection and environmentally sound recovery or disposal of its batteries.”
It continued, “In addition, the Regulation requires that from February 18th, 2027, batteries integrated into certain appliances and sold in the EU must be easily replaceable by end-users at any time during the lifetime of the product.
“Nintendo is implementing measures to comply with these requirements by preparing versions of products to meet the Regulation.”
The average consumer isn’t, admittedly, likely going to notice a difference between the old and new version of the Nintendo Switch 2 - not unless you suddenly require a new battery which is unlikely.
Even still, it’s great to see Nintendo complying with this environmentally friendly initiative.
This aside, most Nintendo fans are currently waiting for news on a new Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo is yet to hold a full mainline Direct this year, having only held indie, partner, and anniversary special showcases.
Rumours point to one being held on the week commencing 8 June, but that should be taken with a pinch of salt until official confirmation lands.
