A new Shrek video game is coming at last

Back to the swamp we go.

That’s it, folks, 2023’s game of the year has been all but confirmed. Shrek is back in a brand new video game, dragging fans back to the swamp for the first time in years.

Behold the glory that is DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing - a new kart racing game which, you guessed it, throws a number of iconic DreamWorks characters behind steering wheels and pits them all against each other. Original? Absolutely not. But the roster of characters is at least very amusing.

Take a look at Shrek’s recent (albeit unofficial) appearance in Elden Ring below.

As Polygon reports, as well as Shrek, we’ve got Fiona, Donkey and Puss in Boots available as playable characters. Also included are Po, Tigress and Master Shifu from the Kung Fu Panda series, Mr. Wolf from The Bad Guys, Hiccup and Astrid from How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind (genuinely one of the greatest DreamWorks characters of all time), and Boss Baby, because every kart racing game needs an infant with a driving license, apparently.

Additionally, every character has got their own unique kart - Fiona’s is, hilariously, an entire, enormous onion (presumably with layers), while Donkey’s is modelled to look like his wife, Dragon, and is decorated with stickers of his children. You know what? Good for him.

Now, does DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing actually look good? No, not really. Looking at the screenshots, it really does look like basically any other mediocre kart racing game ever made - the character models are a bit wonky, many of the tracks are colourful but look rather barren, and in general it’s hard to imagine how it’ll stand up to the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, even with Shrek on its side. Don’t get me wrong though, I’d love to be pleasantly surprised.

DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing will race onto PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch later this year.
