Just When You Thought They Were Done, Modders Have Added Shrek To ‘Stray'

Shrek has now been modded into Stray as a cursed four-legged replacement for the playable cat, and it looks hilarious.

Stray is a lovely game. In amongst all the colossal AAA titles which have released this year, from Elden Ring, to Dying Light 2 Stay Human and Horizon Forbidden West, it’s so refreshing to see a short-but-sweet indie fly into the 2022 lineup as a genuine game of the year contender.

It’s not just the game itself that’s to love - publisher Annapurna Interactive teamed up with Nebraska Humane Society back in July to help raise money for real life kitties by raffling away copies of Stray, and thousands of dollars were raised, which is just fantastic.

Take a look at some adorable feline reactions to Stray below.

On the slightly less wholesome end of the Stray news spectrum though is the onslaught of weird and wonderful mods. Which, let’s face it, are mainly just weird. Back when the game released last month, modders were quick to add GTA: San Andreas’ CJ into the game as an incredibly cursed replacement for the cat protagonist - an image that’s now permanently etched into my mind. Another person replaced the cat with Garfield, which fits surprisingly well, and another threw Spyro the Dragon in instead, because why not, I suppose.

If you thought it was all over now though, think again. As reported by PCGamesN, one modder, Theodor Alef, has now made it possible to play through the full game as Shrek, because nothing is sacred. In similar fashion to the CJ mod, Shrek has been shrunk down to cat size and shape, which looks simultaneously terrifying and hilarious. Check out the mod trailer below.

You can download the mod for free on Nexus Mods right now - as well as the new model, the mod description also states that the sounds for the cat have been changed, although it doesn’t specify what to. I won’t be investigating that matter any further.
