It’s an interesting time to be a James Bond fan. After Daniel Craig’s dramatic exit from the character in No Time To Die, the series is taking a hiatus while it looks for the next 007.

While there are plenty of rumours, speculation and fan casts buzzing around the internet, it’ll likely be a while before we see the world’s most famous spy reappear on the big screen.

Until then, fans are looking forward to the first James Bond video game in years, which is currently in development by Hitman studio IO Interactive. The development team is reportedly hard at work on the title, currently called Project 007, but is yet to share any details on its story, gameplay and other tidbits, until now.

Recently, during an interview with Gamesreactor, Senior Technical Executive Producer Cris Vega revealed which iteration Bond we’ll get to play as. Vega said: “It's going to tell the story of the first Bond and how it becomes the secret agent that he is, but that's what we can comment on.”

The “first bond” doesn’t really give us much to go off, as the timeline of the Bond stories is complicated, to say the least. While there was a clear continuity between Sean Connery’s first appearance in Dr No, all the way to Timothy Dalton’s last appearance the character, things get complicated when you move into “modern” Bond films.

Many consider the Pierce Brosnan films to be a soft reboot of sorts, and Daniel Craig’s films definitely take place in their own timeline.

That being said, there’s a chance the Bond we play in Project 007 could be a younger version of Sean Connery’s spy, or even an entirely new version that closely resembles the character found in the original books by Ian Flemming. Either way, it’ll take place before all the films.

No release date has been given for the new James Bond game, though it’s speculated to launch sometime during 2025.
