Borderlands 4 was just announced in the weirdest way

What's with all the odd announcements likely? This Borderlands 4 is the most recent, and it's just so weird

The games community is alight with Borderlands talk. Not of the games, per se, but of the upcoming movie. However, there’s other Borderlands news – some would argue better news – that was just announced.

Naturally, discussions about Borderlands are flooding social media, chiefly because not everyone is sold on this attempt to turn yet another video game into a film. “It simultaneously looks better than I expected but also an absolute train wreck,” posted one Redditor.

We want to celebrate this "announcement" with a beautiful look at how stunning Cyberpunk 2077 would be with Borderlands' aesthetic

However, there’s more important news up for discussion – like Borderlands 4 being casually announced during an interview.

During the course of an interview with IGN, Gearbox Founder Randy Pitchford described the new Borderlands game as the “greatest thing we've ever done”. It’s crucial at this juncture to point out that Pitchford didn’t say the title was definitely Borderlands 4. However, his response was after he was asked about his favourite from the franchise. As a result, it seems highly likely this is confirmation for Borderlands 4.

Here’s what Pitchford said in full: “Look, we haven't even announced anything of it. Clearly, we're working on something. And I know what we're working on, and holy sh*t... It's the greatest thing we've ever done. And I can't wait, but it's not time yet. It's not time yet. There will be a time.”

As far as announcements go, if this is one, it’s weird. Maybe as a very delayed response to rumours that Borderlands 4 may have already leaked online?

Even then, though, it’s hard to make Pitchford’s announcement less unusual. However, it’s not as ridiculous as the way Xbox confirmed a long-awaited update, but it comes a close second. Very close.

We hate to say this part, especially as we have to say it so often, but it always bears repeating: this could be nothing more than a cruel tease. Plenty of hints towards Borderlands 4 have been dropped before and led to nothing. Still, given the timing of Pitchford’s comments, and the recent spate of Borderlands lore recap on socials, it holds much more weight than mere speculation.
