Baldur’s Gate 3 has impressively knocked Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom off its pedestal to become the year’s best-rated title.

Since its release on PC last week, Baldur’s Gate 3 has exploded in popularity, leading to steep competition for other games in the RPG genre, like Hogwarts Legacy.

Fans have praised its Dungeons & Dragons-style gameplay, as well as just how enormous the game actually is, taking around 200 hours to complete a single playthrough.

While PC players have had a blast so far, console players are being forced to sit and watch the fun from afar, as their ports haven’t arrived yet.

In a surprising turn of events, the game has become a timed PlayStation exclusive, due to the Xbox port facing delays due to Xbox Series S limitations. On the bright side, Xbox fans could soon have access to the first two Baldur’s Gate games, which are rumoured to be coming to Xbox Game Pass soon.

On the topic at hand though, the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has led to the RPG stealing the title of best-rated game of the year on Metacritic, previously owned by Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Zelda game was released a few months ago and steamrolled to the top of the charts with high praise for its story, open world and ingenious gameplay mechanics.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 has managed to usurp the Nintendo game, it’s not leading by a large margin. Currently, Tears of the Kingdom is sitting at a score of 96, whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 has just squeaked ahead with a score of 97.

Despite both deserving the title, only one may wear the crown, and for now it belongs to Baldur’s Gate 3.

With even more AAA releases on the horizon, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Starfield, one thing is certain, the Game Of The Year Awards are going to be very interesting.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC/Steam, with a PlayStation version scheduled for release on the 6th of September this year.
