Mirror's Edge Spiritual Successor Gets Jaw-Dropping New Footage

It's everything I ever dreamed it would be.

Mirror’s Edge is getting a spiritual successor called Panline, and from what we’ve seen so far it’s looking incredible.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of the 2008 game Mirror’s Edge, but it’s sad that Electronic Arts hasn’t done much with the IP in the last two decades.

We got a sequel titled Mirror’s Edge Catalyst in 2016, which seemingly stripped out all of the things that made the original so good. It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t as in love with it as I was with the first.

Aside from that though, nothing has really been done with the Mirror’s Edge IP. Which is why one indie developer has taken it upon themselves to create a spiritual successor to the parkour game.

Panline Looks Incredible, I'm Already Excited To See More

“Runners thrive in the value-inverted hierarchy, controlling the flow of information and the new seat of power,” reads the official description for Panline, the next game by Viridian Matters.

“You run with the Charter crew: A network of couriers, fixers and data brokers driving the new attention economy, built on identity and exclusivity. Between jobs, base is where favors get traded, introductions happen, and trust is built and broken.”

Sound familiar? The developer may not make any specific references to Mirror’s Edge (presumably to avoid being caught by the sweaty palms of EA’s lawyers), but there are some similarities here that should get fans of the series excited.

Panline will be a non-linear open-world game emphasising movement via free-running and parkour, with no mini-map to follow. Instead, you’re guided by landmarks and the world itself.

Meanwhile, the precious cargo that you carry on you will be lost if you fall and die, meaning every move matters. You move around during the day, and then use the night-time to consolidate.

As you progress, you unlock new areas and shortcuts to move through, as well as larger inventory slots, better loadouts, and new favours to help you get about unscathed.

Panline will launch into Steam Early Access later this year, where it is expected to stay in this state for around a “1-3 year window” depending on whether the scope of the game changes during development.

The early access version will launch with the core move set, as well as a playable sandbox area focused on courier jobs, multiple districts to explore, upgrades and kits. It won’t include the story campaign, but will have small teases of this to be added further down the line.

If you're interested in keeping watch on Panline, you can wishlist it on Steam now.
