Mirror's Edge spiritual successor comes out incredibly soon, and a free demo is available now

Mirror’s Edge was one of the best games of its time, fusing together intense first-person parkour with jaw-dropping sci-fi visuals to create an unforgettable experience.

While we’re probably not going to be getting Mirror’s Edge 3 any time soon, many indie publishers over the past few years have sought to provide their own spiritual successors with varying degrees of success.

Two examples we can think of are Motorslice from earlier this year, as well as the in-development Panline which is slated for release some time in 2027.

If you’re after the same adrenaline rush as you got in the original Mirror’s Edge though, thankfully there’s a new indie parkour game coming out in two weeks that’ll surely scratch the same itch.

Vholume has been making the rounds on social media over the past few weeks, and luckily we only have to wait until August 21 to be able to play it.

On the surface, Vholume makes a lot of similar choices as other games that pride themselves on being faithful Mirror’s Edge-likes do. The levels are based on momentum, with multiple routes to complete them, and feature plenty of challenges for your agility and creativity.

As you keep playing, you’ll discover ways to exploit your momentum to reach shortcuts, breaking the labyrinthine design of each map which has been carefully constructed by the game’s developer, IronEqual.

Vholume appeals to Mirror's Edge sickos like me, but there are also a few crucial changes

Unlike Mirror’s Edge, there are a few small but rather important changes which help it to adapt to what a modern spiritual successor looks like.

For starters, the shaky camera which helped to simulate movement in Mirror’s Edge as players controlled Faith throughout the large city is reduced here. This decreases the nausea that players feel during parkour sessions, and helps to retain focus on upcoming obstacles.

Another welcoming change is that the focus is purely on free-running, whereas Mirror’s Edge split its gameplay up between parkour and combat. The action in that game featured guns and hand-to-hand combat, and was arguably the clunkiest part of Mirror’s Edge.

By not including this though, it keeps players focused on solving the puzzle of getting to the end of each level without having to worry about maintaining their health bar or dispatching enemies.

In addition to this, perhaps the most obvious addition is online multiplayer, where players can complete levels together side-by-side. In motion, this makes the game resemble more of a surf map from Counter-Strike.

Apparently, you’ll be able to race against your pals either in real-time or against their ghosts, allowing you to set times and smash records at a quick pace.

Altogether, I’m looking forward to playing the full version of Vholume, and if you are too then the good news is that a free demo is available to play now which features four full levels centred around teaching you the mechanics of movement and momentum.
