There's something lovely about getting to sit down over the course of a weekend and really settling in with a big RPG. The one we're here to tell you about to today might take you a little longer than one weekend to get through, but in our book, that makes it even more worthy of your consideration.

Octopath Traveller 0 is a prequel to the original game of the same name (without the 0), and it's difficult to overstate just how big the game is, with the game taking well over 100 hours to finish if you're into completionism.

The game finally dropped on December 4 and it has been well received by fans so far, sitting on Mostly Positive reviews from the community on Steam at the time of writing.

Octopath Traveller 0 Demo Progress Carries Over

If you think Octopath Traveller 0 might be the kind of thing you'd enjoy but you're tentative about parting with £39.99, which is totally understandable if you've never played the series, there is a demo available on all platforms.

The cool thing about it is that the demo is actually just the prologue, so once you've played through it, if you do decide to go for the full purchase, you can carry over your progress so you don't have to play through the same section again.

The story oddly takes inspiration from a mobile game, in the form of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, though Square Enix obviously removed the gacha and mobile game mechanics this time around.

Don't let the mobile roots fool you though, as this is very much a fulsome RPG in its own right, with several more layers of mechanics that deepen the experience considerably.

The game features an impressively broad character creation system that lets you alter everything from the appearance of your protagonist to their voice, motions and even favourite dish.

A big part of the game is also the restoration of your hometown, which is also a big part of the time sink if you're going for the 100%.

The HD-2D graphics are also some of the better that you'll see in any game, including from Square Enix's own extensive catalogue, with retro pixel art in abundance that works very well with the gameplay itself.

Octopath Traveller 0 is available right now for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S
