Steam Free Download Offers Taster of 2025’s Best Upcoming RPG

Steam users can download a taste of one of 2025’s most highly anticipated RPGs for free right now.

There are tons of fantastic RPGs that we can play, whether it’s huge worlds to explore, interesting NPCs to form relationships with or epic combat in a fight to the death to save the universe. You know, the typical standard RPG shenanigans.

RPGs have been around for decades, perhaps even much longer than we’ve been alive. From text adventures in the 1970s, to huge and diverse open-worlds provided by the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

So Much RPG Goodness To Choose From

Other games are a bit more subtle, and when these games arrive, it’s often a nice surprise, because they may have been a game not on your radar, but ended up being one of your favourite games of any particular year. One such game for me was in 2018 with Octopath Traveler, published by Square Enix.

Octopath Traveler very much reminds me of old-school RPG games from Square Enix, from before the Final Fantasy VII era.

Then, Octopath Traveler II arrived in 2023, arguably improving on its predecessor in almost every way. Now, if that wasn't enough old-school, sprite visual goodness for you, then you might be pleased to know that a prequel is on the way this year.

“Start from zero and discover the newest entry in the Octopath Traveler series. Experience a story of restoration and retribution over the divine rings—an epic saga that unfolds across the realm of Orsterra,” reads the synopsis of Octopath Traveler 0 on Steam.

Octopath Traveler Is One For Old-School RPG Fans

It adds: “Enjoy familiar features such as the series' HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG; the player's ability to roleplay using Path Actions of their choice; and the Break and Boost system that can turn the tide of battle.

"Additionally, brand-new features such as character creation and town building allow you to create your own character and restore your hometown.”

If Octopath Traveler 0 looks like your cup of tea, then you’ll be pleased to know that it has a free playable demo on Steam right now.

In fact, the demo is actually a prologue which transfers your progress into the full game.

The Octopath Traveler 0 prologue is not only available on PC via Steam, but it’s also on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo.

Octopath Traveler 0 will be released in its full form on 4 December 2025.
