Netflix renews show for season 2... then changes its mind and cancels it instead

Animated comedy Inside Job has been cancelled, Shion Takeuchi has confirmed. Its second season was initially announced in last summer.

Streaming giant Netflix has cancelled yet another beloved show after just one season.

The animated comedy series Inside Job first made its way onto Netflix in 2021. Created by former Gravity Falls writer Shion Takeuchi, the show takes place in a world where conspiracy theories are real, and centres around a pair of characters working for a shadow government agency (thanks, IGN). The series was received well by viewers and critics alike (boasting a 79% critic score and 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), and last summer, it was announced that it was going to be renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, things have now changed.

Take a look at the trailer for Inside Job below.

Takeuchi took to Twitter to break the bad news: “I’m heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel season two of Inside Job,” she wrote. “Over the years, these characters have become real people to me, and I am devastated not to be able to watch them grow up. Reagan and Brett deserved to get their ending and finally find happiness. And I would have loved to been able to share what was in store with you all.

“To everyone who watched, thank you for coming along on the ride,” she continued. “Even though I’m sad, it helps to now that there’s people out there who cared just as much about these characters as me.”

This is far from the first time that Netflix has abruptly cancelled a show - recently, it was announced that the period drama 1899 wouldn’t be renewed for a second season, and fans quickly began a petition to try and save it. Last year, a number of other series were also laid to rest, including Fate: The Winx Saga, which was left on a frustrating cliffhanger.

Amongst all these fan-favourite series being cancelled, it was recently announced that Wednesday will be returning for a second season on the platform, although no release window has been confirmed.
