For avid Call of Duty fans, the multiplayer reveal is always the most anticipated part of a new title’s release cycle. And finally, as shown during this evening's Call of Duty: Next event, we finally got to see the multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare II in action.

The event went into detail about the future of the shooter franchise, because as well as showcasing Modern Warfare II’s multiplayer. Activision also fully revealed Warzone 2.0 and shared details on Warzone Mobile. But before that, let's get into those Modern Warfare II multiplayer details.

Check out the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Multiplayer Reveal Trailer below

The trailer is filled to the brim with the sort of ooh-rah shooty bang action that you’d expect in a Modern Warfare title. Following on from Infinity Ward’s 2019 blockbuster Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II features a deep multiplayer offering with new maps, modes and game mechanics. Other, more-familiar sights in the trailer include heartbeat sensors, throwing knives and juggernauts, because why not?

Modern Warfare II’s multiplayer is set to further refine the way we play Call of Duty, with enhanced movement tactics shown off in the trailer. These include swimming and underwater combat, tactical sprints, dolphin dives, mantling and ledge hanging, all of which helps provide a real tactical edge.

Speaking of tactical play, 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ushered in a new tactical era, and MWII looks set to maintain that trend by introducing third-person playlists and 3v3 Raids (coming post launch) which focus heavily on team communication and coordination. Straying away from multiplayer briefly, co-op fans will be glad to hear that Special Ops will also be making a return, and has had been completely revamped for you and your teammate.

Back to multiplayer again now and the widely popular Gunsmith from the previous iteration is getting a nice little upgrade, too! Gunsmith 2.0 makes it easier and quicker to switch between weapons than ever before, whilst also boasting loads of customisation options so you can craft the ultimate loadout for your playstyle.

Players will be able to get their teeth stuck into covert stealth gameplay, amphibious assaults, vehicular warfare, set in locales all around the world. The Modern Warfare franchise has always been a globetrotting experience, and Modern Warfare II looks no different, with maps ranging from 6v6 to 32v32 expected in the full release, and a handful playable during the upcoming beta period.

As I’ve just mentioned, you don’t have to wait until Modern Warfare II releases, because you can get stuck into the action during the open beta this weekend. The open beta will be free across all platforms (eventually), with players who pre-ordered digitally, at retail or received beta codes gaining the first access. The beta begins on September 16th for PlayStation users, before opening up further on September 22nd for Xbox and PC users to join the fight. As well as that, players who jump into the beta each weekend will get their hands on some sweet rewards, which include emblems, weapon blueprints and operator skins.

A multitude of game modes will be available during the open beta, fan favourites such as Team Deathmatch and Domination will make an appearance, as well as new modes called Knockout, Prisoner Rescue and Invasion. Furthermore a handful of maps will be available during the beta period, there’ll be three smaller 6v6 maps: Valderas Museum, Farm 18 and Mercado Las Almas, as well as one large-scale 32v32 map called Sarrif Bay.

The upcoming instalment continues with classic boots on the ground gameplay that fans know and love, but with game changing innovations thrown into the mix. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is set to release globally on October 28th on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Battle.net and Steam. See you in the open beta!
