Well, the cat is truly out of the bag now, because we have our first proper official confirmation that remasters for both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are real, and they’re coming to PlayStation 5.

Rumours of remasters for Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 have been making the rounds for a while now, but thanks to a leak from a ratings board (why is it always ratings boards spoiling this stuff?) we now know said leaks had a bit of truth to them.

As spotted by Insider Gaming's Mike Straw, listings for both “MW2” and “MW3” just went live on the Australian Classification Board site.

There are a few juicy details here, the biggest of which is that the listing for Modern Warfare 2 refers to it specifically as the “PS5 Cross-Gen Edition”.

On the other hand, the listing for Modern Warfare 3 refers to it simply as “Cross-Gen Edition” without any mention of the PlayStation 5.

Now, if you’re curious as to how we know these are remasters of the original Modern Warfare games, and not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) and not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), the completely truthful answer is… we don’t.

We’re essentially assuming that the Australian Classification Board’s choice to refer to the games as “MW2” and “MW3”, as opposed to “MWII” and “MWIII”, implies they’re the original Modern Warfares.

Also, I’m kind of just theorising here, but I think the timing of this is kind of suspicious.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 already has a remastered campaign release on the PlayStation 4, so I’m curious as to why a new version specifically for PS5 would be necessary… unless of course, these remasters might also be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2?

Hey, it’s just a theory… but if it does end up being true, I’m just saying I told you so.
