According to Metacritics ‘Top 10 Best Videogames of 2023’, nine out of the ten highest-rated games on the platform at the moment are remakes or remasters, with only one game being a 100% original creation.

At the top of the list in the number one spot is the critically-acclaimed Metroid Prime Remastered, followed very closely by The Witcher 3: Complete Edition and the Resident Evil 4 remake which actually owns three spots on the list for its PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports respectively.

Moving down the list there’s also Tetris Effect: Connected, Persona 4: Golden (which secured two spots for its Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X ports) the Dead Space remake, and finally, the only game not a remake or remaster, Hi-Fi Rush.

Obviously remakes and remasters are dominating the space when it comes to new releases, and there’s even more on the way with games like Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and the Silent Hill 2 remake, so they’re definitely not going away anytime soon.

While some may argue that there’s a lack of originality in new releases nowadays, with many studios retreading familiar ground or bringing a beloved game or series back to life, you can’t argue a lack of quality. Resident Evil 4 alone is already one of the highest-rated games of the year and it hasn’t even officially released yet!

However, with big new releases on the horizon like Legend of Zelda:Tears of the Kingdom, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor and Starfield, the balance could well and truly shift in favour of original releases…
