Max Payne meets The Matrix in stunning new game made by solo developer

A new shooter enters the arena

Sometimes you can watch a short clip of a new game and just know that it’s for you. It’s amazing how much action you can pack into a clip to showcase all that hard work and pull in prospective players.

One user on Reddit has entered r/gaming with the proclamation that they quit their job to make a game, and the clip they uploaded, to show it off, has sold it me right away. The user, u/minidue, opened the thread saying, “I quit my job to pursue the dream of making this game. I love retro action, so here is a co-op Max Payne meets Matrix game called ‘In Style’.”

The Matrix has influenced so many video games up to this point

From what we see on the post, In Style looks seems to be chanelling several games as its inspiration, including Rollerdrome and the skateboarding games of the late nineties. Essentially the player will control a character who pulls off parkour stunts while blasting enemies with a variety of weapons.

Any time you can pull off a backflip while landing assault rifle shots is going to be a thrill; the excitement here is off the chain. I love the mystery of the central character too, all dressed in black with a wide brimmed hat makes this look like a western has merged with the inner city of a early 2000s action film.

Beyond this Reddit post, very little is known on In Style, which is a shame. The gif used looks like the game could be quite far into development, utilsing a PS2 visual style. Hopefully we get some more news soon as this could easily fill a gap in the industry we didn’t even know we had. Just let me combo some martial arts moves and gunplay, I’m going for that high-score.
