The director on the cancelled online project, once due to be part of The Last of Us franchise, has revealed details on his new game, within his newly formed studio.

Vinit Agarwal, has set up a new studio with former Creative Director of Naughty Dog, Joe Pettinati, with the aim of creating a similar online title.

Speaking to Game*Spark, Agarwal detailed a little about what to expect from the game, going into the moments he worked on at Naughty Dog.

In a translated transcription from PSU, the director said, “I worked on both multiplayer and single-player. I was mainly in charge of boss battles, and Naughty Dog’s boss battles are generally one-on-one situations.”

He goes on to say this working on both single player and multiplayer allowed him to think differently about player interaction.

He further explained, “A big part of what inspired me to [go independent] was seeing the potential in combining Naughty Dog’s speciality, cinematic action, with multiplayer.”

While there are no major details revealed on the project, Agarwal has revealed that the game has been in development for several months and regularly plays it with friends.

The original plans for the online components to The Last of Us were scrapped by Sony in December 2023, much to the disappointment of fans.

This was initially due to be included in The Last of Us Part II, before then shifting to becoming a separate experience, before its eventual cancellation.

Agarwal’s first game in the newly minted studio will pull from the design ideas behind the cancelled multiplayer game, but whether it features any kind of post-apocalyptic scenes is yet to be shown.

While there are so few details to really get excited about, it’s great to see the studio formed, and a plan in place to deliver a similar experience to players who missed out.
