It’s been such a long time since a release in the Mass Effect series that it was really starting to feel like we might never see another game in the beloved sci-fi franchise again.
Though the release of Mass Effect Andromeda was obviously deeply disappointing for us long-time fans, it did little to dampen the fond memories we have of the original trilogy, and it would be a great tragedy not to see another game related to that story.
Although we’ve known that another game is in development for a long time, there haven’t been any updates from BioWare themselves, and it was starting to feel like there might be something nefarious happening behind the scenes.
Fortunately, a new update has come along, and it’s actually quite encouraging for those of us who are waiting in the wings.
Bioware Now Totally Focused on Mass Effect

As first reported by VideoGamer.com, former BioWare executive Mark Darrah sat down with YouTuber Destin Legarie to discuss the end of Anthem and what’s happening at the studio right now. As part of that conversation, he gave us an exciting update on the next Mass Effect game, and with Anthem’s servers finally shutting down, it seems as though the studio has no other distractions on the table.
“BioWare has effectively become a one-project studio, which has its own problems. But it’s a different set of problems than what BioWare has been up until arguably 2022, which is several projects fighting for attention and resources,” Darrah said.

“As far as I can tell, 100% of what they’re working on is Mass Effect. That’s probably for the best.”
It’s an encouraging update and a lot more than we’ve had in recent times, even if it doesn’t exactly tell us how far along they are in the process.
At the same time, Darrah expanded upon the company’s decision to pursue Anthem as a game despite its overall failure, when they could have been exclusively working on the next Mass Effect.
“My feeling is that BioWare has always been changing. I mean, by that argument, we should never have made Neverwinter Nights because we were a 2D RPG maker. We should never have made Mass Effect because we were a tactical RPG maker, not an action RPG maker,” he said.
Darrah continued: “Was Anthem too big of a reach? Yeah, for sure. But could you tell at the time? I don’t know. I don’t know that you could.”
In any case, BioWare needs a big hit, and Mass Effect has all of the ingredients to potentially do that if they can nail it in the same way they did with the original trilogy.
I’ve got everything crossed that they’ll be able to do so.
