Mass Effect 5 Confirms New Romances, We're So Back

Love, in space

Mass Effect 2, in my opinion, has every right to be part of the debate around the greatest game of all time. Bioware's epic space opera took us to places that we had never been to before, and it was one of the most emotive and deep experiences in any RPG up to that point.

After rounding out Commander Shepherd's story arc with the third game, and finally defeating the existential threat to the galaxy in the Reapers, we eventually got Andromeda as the fourth release in the series. That was, unfortunately a pretty unmitigated disaster, and it threw the whole future of Mass Effect into doubt.

It's not all over just yet though, as Bioware has now released a statement confirming their commitment to producing the next one, putting to be any fears that may have arisen after EA's huge $55 billion deal to go private with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

As part of that statement, they also confirmed a few small tidbits about the upcoming game, including the return of the romance system in some form.

Romances Return in Mass Effect 5

As first reported by IGN, Mass Effect franchise head Mike Gamble shared a statement about what they were working on as part of the annual N7 celebrations.

"Let's start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe," Gamble started "The truth is, the last few years have been an incredibly busy time at BioWare, but currently, the team is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect. We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out."

Now obviously that may not come as a huge shock, but with how little information we have had on the game so far, it's nice to know that one of the staple features of the series is set to return.

Gamble went on to encourage players to continue scouring tweets for hidden communications from the developers, ahead of more concrete news.

"We're excited by what we're building, and we promise you: when we're ready, it'll be a lot of fun to show," Gamble concluded. "Until then, thank you for your patience because y'all are thirsty for news and I see you looking for secret meaning in my tweets (okay, sometimes they have secret meaning)."

So, finally some hope for us beleaguered Mass Effect fans. Let's just hope they can restore the series to its former glory.
