As sad as it is that season one of HBO’s The Last of Us has drawn to a close, we know for a fact that a second season is on the way so whilst it’s a sad goodbye, it’s only a goodbye for now.

Sunday’s finale was packed with action, easter eggs, and cameos. Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey, who portray Ellie and Abby in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us games, cameoed and brought Anna Williams and an operating theatre nurse to life. Fans also think they spotted the actual character of Abby as a woman with braided hair could be seen fleeing the hospital. Very intriguing. Abby is, of course, a major character in The Last of Us Part II and it’s been confirmed that season two will adapt Part II. It won’t adapt the entirety of the game though.

The Last of Us Part I launches on PC on 28 March.

In a conversation with GQ, co-showrunner Neil Druckmann confirmed that Part II would span more than one season. When asked if the story could be told in its entirety in a single season, he replied, “No. No way. It’s more than one season.” Craig Mazin then added, “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many, but more than one is factually correct.” It’s no surprise really. Part II is a much longer game, plus we already know that Druckmann and Mazin are interested in diving into the lives of the WLF and Seraphites. I’d imagine we’ll also see more of what Tommy gets up to in Seattle.

That begs the question: where will the writers split the story? I could easily see the Santa Barbara section being left for a later season. Will we see the events that take place in Seattle split? Initially, I assumed Ellie and Abby’s story would be told side by side. We could see an Ellie season, chronicling her experiences in Seattle followed by an Abby season doing the same. I think that would prove to be very controversial though. I’d much rather see the two character’s tales unfold alongside one another.

Either way, Druckmann also teased that they wouldn’t be shying away from Part II’s plot despite it proving to be controversial with some players. I already cannot wait. Bring on season two.
