There’s no denying that the Grand Theft Auto series is one of the biggest properties in all of entertainment and the anticipation for its next entry, GTA VI has already reached fever pitch.

Following years of rumours and leaks, Rockstar Games finally unveiled the first official GTA VI trailer in December 2023, and within days it was smashing records. At the time of writing, the trailer uploaded to the Rockstar Games YouTube channel has amassed over 185 million views and counting. Understandably, fans cannot wait for the next GTA VI trailer to arrive. However, with such excitement for what will arguably be the biggest video game release of all time, scammers will find a way to exploit enthusiastic fans.

As reported by Dexerto.com (via Moonlock), a form of malware is making the rounds that looks to access private data on Mac devices, though I wouldn't be surprised if other forms aim to infiltrate Windows OS too. This form of malware pretends to be an official source from Norton anti-virus or even GTA VI-related. It aims to trick people into clicking an image which will then active a Mach-O file called AppleApp which appears to originate from a Russian IP address that will steal sensitive information including passwords

“Disguised as a harmless DMG file, it tricks the user into installation via a phishing image, persuading the user to bypass macOS’s Gatekeeper security feature. Gatekeeper normally prevents unsigned and un-notarized applications from running, but the malware exploits a user override feature,” said Moonlock researchers.

In this day and age, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to remain safe from software that aims to steal our sensitive information and sometimes bogus emails will be disguised as friends and family members. So we must always check the email sender as the address can often be a series of random characters from a Gmail account, for example, something that an official company such as Rockstar Games would never use.

Grand Theft Auto VI aims to be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. At the time of writing, Rockstar Games is yet to announce a PC release.
