GTA 6 looks drastically different depending on where you live

Grand Theft Auto VI is already shaping up to be one of the biggest games ever made, but it seems not everyone is going to see exactly the same version of Vice City.

As millions of players flocked to see the extended gameplay trailer on Netflix last week, becoming the highest-watched program on the service worldwide, we now have a solid foundation for what our Grand Theft Auto VI experience will look like at the beginning, at least.

Yet the 'Extended Look' showcase isn't quite what everyone will see - and that's not just a reference to how it was caught on a base model PS5, and those with different consoles will get either better or worse graphics.

Instead, Rockstar has apparently made some noticeable changes to its latest GTA 6 footage depending on where you're watching it, with certain scenes being heavily censored in some regions.

The most obvious example comes from China's version of the trailer, where Rockstar's official upload on Bilibili has reportedly been edited to blur several of the game's more mature moments.

We all know that GTA 6 crosses lines. The franchise is renowned for bloodshed and gruesome brutality, narcotics and gambling, and sex and nudity, the latter of which is being ramped up significantly this year.

In some countries, many of these non-PG elements aren't allowed, and have meant GTA has been forced to cut them from the game entirely.

Ahead of GTA 6, the first censored variation of the Extended Look trailer has appeared online, as the Chinese trailer has reportedly blurred an abundance of features.

Highlighted on social media by user 'videotech', the Chinese version released on social media site Bilibili is vastly different from that seen on Netflix in the US and Europe.

Blurred filters have been placed over expletive elements of the trailer, including smoking, bloody scenes, corpses, revealing clothing, and suggestive dancing.

In some cases, the censorship is so aggressive that large portions of the screen are simply covered by enormous blurs.

It's quite the contrast to the footage being shown elsewhere.

Interestingly, this doesn't appear to mean that Rockstar is preparing a fundamentally different version of GTA 6 for the Chinese market.

The uncensored Extended Look remains available through Rockstar's own website, including Chinese subtitles, while other GTA 6 trailers uploaded to Bilibili reportedly haven't received the same treatment.

That would suggest the changes are more likely related to the requirements of the platform or local regulations, rather than Rockstar deciding that Vice City's more adult content needs to be removed from the game entirely.

Rockstar itself has yet to publicly explain why the Bilibili version was changed.

It's also worth stressing that this doesn't confirm that GTA 6 will officially launch in China, nor does it tell us what the final game would look like there.

Still, it's a fascinating glimpse at how differently the same blockbuster game can be presented depending on where you happen to live.

For most of us, Vice City remains every bit as chaotic and ridiculous as Rockstar intended.

For some players, though, it seems a rather sizeable blur is about to become part of the experience.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
