Fans are already worried that an incredible-looking fan-made Grand Theft Auto project is going to be subject to Take-Two’s legal wrath, and they have good reason to be concerned (given Take-Two’s track record).
Less than two weeks ago, we published a story about how Take-Two issued a takedown notice against a very impressive browser port of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
It was a conclusion that we could all see coming from a mile away. Where Rockstar Games’ titles are concerned, Take-Two has a very lengthy, highly criticised history of DMCA takedowns.
Now, using another company’s IP for profit is one thing, but the issue that fans take with Take-Two is their propensity for going after Grand Theft Auto mods.

Mods usually don’t result in the people behind said projects receiving any kind of money for their efforts. Modders often just create them for the love of the game (figuratively and literally).
As detailed in a very lengthy post over on the GTA Forums, detailing the publisher’s list of takedowns up until 2021, Take-Two clearly doesn't care about that. Doesn’t matter if it’s for a title as recent as Grand Theft Auto V or a title as old as Grand Theft Auto III; if your GTA mod gets enough traction, they will come after you.
That brings me neatly to today’s big Grand Theft Auto fan-made project: Grand Theft Auto: Carcer City.

It’s a total conversion mod for GTA: San Andreas that aims to bring Carcer City, from Rockstar Games' Manhunt series, to a Grand Theft Auto game.
It looks very cool and has started to gain some immediate popularity online… which is why everyone over on r/pcgaming subreddit is already certain that Take-Two is on its way to shut the project down.
“Looks cool. Just counting down the days for the takedown from 2K though,” commented user Electronic-Clerk6735.
"It's like they never learn... Keep stuff like this a secret until release day," replied user cory3612.
“maybe 5 years ago they wouldn't care, but this close to GTA6, it's going to get nuked,” commented user PermanentThrowaway33.
In regard to that last comment, personally, I don’t think that Grand Theft Auto VI’s release will have too much bearing on Take-Two’s decision to come after this one.
They’ve been going after mods like this for a long, long time now, and I don’t think that’s going to stop any time soon– at least until someone successfully challenges them.
And, well, good luck with that. One of the reasons Take-Two is clearly so comfortable going after projects like this is because they have a lot of money, which can be used to purchase very good legal representation.
At this point, I gotta wonder why anyone bothers making mods like this for GTA games. Seeing all your hard work get flushed down the drain before anyone even gets to try it has got to sting.
