Grand Theft Auto VI will be the clear winner of 2026, if it launches, but its competitors are still making moves to boot it off its pedestal.
Last year was disappointing for Grand Theft Auto fans for a number of reasons, but, aside from the delays, one massive letdown had nothing to do with Rockstar Games.
MindsEye was created by former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies and his studio Build a Rocket Boy, published by IO Interactive.
While it never made any direct mention of the Grand Theft Auto series it was clearly positioning itself as a rival, and even an alternative to Cyberpunk 2077 in many ways.

Following a miserable launch though the game quickly fell into obscurity though it’s now attempting to claw its way back through a new content update.
"After months of continued post-launch support following player and critic feedback, [MindsEye] receives its most significant post-launch update yet” began Build A Rocket Boy’s announcement via PC Gamer, “achieving the studio's vision for quality and setting the stage for exciting future content updates.”
MindsEye suffered heavily from performance issues and game-breaking bugs at launch rendering it unplayable for many, though those that could play the game weren’t impressed anyway.

While this update seemingly fixes a lot of the issues players had with the game you can’t shake the feeling that it’s all too little, too late.

Nevertheless the game’s struggles seemingly haven’t swayed the team from pushing more updates, as from the sound of things it’s currently working on a major title expansion.
But how do the players feel about this? Hilariously there aren’t enough to form an opinion as according to TheGamer, MindsEye’s concurrents increased by a mere 15 players on Steam, after the update dropped.
Perhaps this will improve when a more substantial expansion is released but I’m not holding my breath, and neither should you.
Games like No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 suffered similar disastrous launches, but the reason they managed to climb back from the brink of death was because players actually cared to see it happen.
MindsEye, on the other hand, failed to impress the majority with its gameplay and story, and it feels like no amount of content updates are going to change that.
What could have been a competitor to the next Grand Theft Auto game is dying a slow and painful death. Will this new update bring you back?
