Video games have been scrambling to avoid the launch day of GTA VI, and understandably so. It’s one of the most highly anticipated games in generations. As such, even the best games of 2026 may get overshadowed by the goliath.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that GTA VI is releasing in November 2026, and following June 18’s pre-order announcement, hype for the Rockstar Games’ title is shifting into a new gear.

2026 has already been one of the best years for gaming, blessing us with the likes of Resident Evil Requiem, Pokémon Pokopia, 007 First Light, Forza Horizon 6 and many more. However, we still have even more fantastic games to look forward to that aren't GTA VI.

Some games are daring enough to release in the same month as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto title. After all, they might be able to take advantage of what is otherwise a quiet month for video game releases.

I won't be including video games that have already been released at the time of writing this article, and I will only include titles that are releasing from September 2026, two months away from GTA VI.

Video Games That Might Get Overshadowed by GTA VI

The Blood of Dawnwalker, Bandai Namco

The Blood of Dawnwalker - 3 September (PC, PS5 and Xbox)

If you love games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, not to mention vampires, then the fantasy RPG from Rebel Wolves could be for you.

The Blood of the Dawnwalker takes place in a gothic, 14th-century Europe, overrun by vampires. It looks like a game that is brutal as much as it is beautiful, and its story will be shaped by the decisions that you make. If the trailers are a true reflection of the final product, this game could achieve similar success to another popular fantasy RPG of 2026, Crimson Desert.

Marvel’s Wolverine - 15 September (PS5)

Assuming that God of War Laufey hasn't shadow-dropped by the time you’re reading this article, the next major AAA exclusive on PlayStation 5 will be Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games.

From the developers who brought us the likes of Ratchet & Clank, as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man, this offering starring everyone’s favourite man with an adamantium skeleton is far more brutal compared to our adventures with the friendly neighbourhood, web-slinging hero. Whether Marvel’s Wolverine achieves the same success as its peers remains to be seen. But judging by its high-octane gameplay trailers, it stands a good chance.

Control Resonant - 24 September (PC, PS5 and Xbox)

This is the direct sequel to Control of 2019, which swaps protagonist Jesse Faden with her younger brother, and somewhat anti-hero, Dylan. Control Resonant also moves towards its combat being melee-focused, unlike the firearms specialist, Jesse. But make no mistake, this is the same wonderful and wacky world of the Remedy-connected universe that fans love.

We recently went hands-on with Control Resonant and left feeling very impressed. Control Resonant has all the potential to be one of the best games of 2026, and hopefully, its launch is far enough away from GTA VI for it not to have a negative impact on launch sales.

Silent Hill: Townfall, Konami

Silent Hill: Townfall 24 September (PC, PS5 and Xbox)

Following the gameplay demo shown at Summer Game Fest of Silent Hill: Townfall, we came away feeling that the latest entry in Konami’s survival horror series could be the P.T. spiritual successor we’ve been waiting for.

Set in a fictional Scottish town that just so happens to be typically foggy, with or without the spooky Silent Hill shenanigans, and played in a first-person perspective, the monsters in Townfall are not only terrifying, but they’ll be getting up close and very personal. Could this be the scariest Silent Hill game ever? Only time will tell.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword - 25 September (PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch 2)

The legendary samurai action-adventure from Capcom returns with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Revealed at The Game Awards in 2024, fans have had to wait very patiently for a new game in the beloved series, with the last mainline entry being in 2006 with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on the PS2.

Intense combat, supernatural enemies, a dark fantasy world, gorgeous visuals, and hopefully, a story that will keep us hooked from start to finish. There’s a lot to look forward to with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and right now, you can download and play its free demo.

Gears of War: E-Day - 6 October (PC and Xbox)

The newest release of Xbox’s iconic cover-based shooter is nearly here with Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set roughly 14 years before the events of the original game, and it looks to have the potential to be one of the best games in the series yet.

Gears of War: E-Day is set during the opening moments of the Locust invasion of Sera, an event known as Emergence Day. Players will also play as young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, one of the most iconic bromances in video game history. It will be interesting to see how these early events unfold and ultimately lead to Marcus’s imprisonment, as seen in the opening of the original Gears of War (2006).

Valor Mortis, Lyrical Games/One More Level

Valor Mortis 13 October (PC, PS5 and Xbox)

This first-person action adventure from One More Level could be one of the sleeper hits of 2026. It’s set in a fictional medieval fantasy era, which looks to be inspired by Renaissance Europe during the 14th and 16th centuries. Its gameplay also looks to be very BioShock-inspired.

The gameplay trailers look gruesome; the combat looks challenging, especially when it comes to mastering the parry, and visually, it looks quite stunning. Valor Mortis is from the creators of the fantastic Ghostrunner, which is a promising sign indeed. Oh, and it also has a playable demo on Steam, so you might want to check it out today.

Phantom Blade Zero - 29 October (PC and PS5)

If you’re after a new Soulsborne fix, then Phantom Blade Zero, created by the new development team at S-Game Studio, might just be your cup of tea.

At first glance, Phantom Blade Zero gives me Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice vibes, but instead of being inspired by Japan’s Sengoku period, it has a sci-fi futuristic tone, and it looks awesome. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, visually, it’s a delightful treat for your eyes. Other than looking gorgeous in what looks to be exciting combat, its story also sets up an intriguing tone.

“You play as Soul, a warrior with only sixty-six days left to live. Fend off assassins, unravel world-ending conspiracies, and defend your values with your life,” reads a part of its synopsis. We can wait for Phantom Blade Zero to arrive.

Lords of the Fallen II - 2026 Date TBC (PC, PS5, Xbox and Switch 2)

This is the second Soulslike on this list, and it’s Lords of the Fallen II, the sequel to the series reboot that began in 2023. Perhaps what makes this gruelling action RPG an enticing prospect, other than looking gorgeous and having challenging combat, during its Summer Game Fest reveal, its trailer stated that the game is shaped by community feedback, which is always great to see.

Judging from the gameplay reveal, Lords of the Fallen II looks bigger, nicer, and has even more ridiculously over-the-top boss battles. Pretty much all the ingredients you’d want from an evolved sequel. Hopefully, its confirmed release date will drop sooner rather than later.

As a side note, obviously, we are also getting the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, and while it’s unlikely either will do anything close to GTA VI numbers, they’ll be just fine. Hence why they’re not mentioned above.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC port is yet to be announced.
