Pokémon Classic is the bold Kanto remake play if you need a Pokopia break

Pokémon Pokopia recently released its first major DLC expansion, Bubbly Basin.

The paid add-on introduces a new, aquatic-themed town to play with, as well as dozens of new Pokémon to encounter.

It’s available to those who have completed the second available town, Bleak Beach, so pretty early on in the story. For those who have yet to finish the full story, though, you’d be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed by your newfound options.

Should upheaving the Kanto region become too tiresome, you’re encouraged to check out Pokémon Classic for a break.

We’ve shone a light on several Pokémon ROMhacks over the past few months, but this is one we’re particularly fond of is a remake of Pokémon Yellow.

It was created by Danirainbow and their fellow developers, who called it a “love letter to Kanto” on a recent Reddit post. The ROMhack is a reimagining of Pokémon Yellow that uses Pokémon Emerald as a base.

You can find it on Hackdex right now, with its description teasing “a new journey in familiar territory.”

It continues: “Adventure forth side by side with your Partner Pikachu and experience this remake of Pokémon Yellow. With a focus on the original 151, Classic is packed full of QoL enhancements, expanded story, daily events, post-game content, and bug fixes. My team and I are mega excited to share this with you, and we hope you become the very best like no one ever was.”

As it says on the tin, this is a classic reimagining that respects the original release. With enhanced visuals and better sprites, it’s modernised without losing its identity, which is what we like.

That said, there are a couple of cool additions that would have never been possible in the original Game Boy game. The best example is Mega Evolutions, which wouldn’t be introduced until Gen VI. You can see a Mega Charizard X sprite on the ROMhack’s page.

In order to play it for yourself, you’ll need a legally-obtained ROM of Pokémon Emerald for the Game Boy Advance.

Pokémon Classic makes a childhood rumour a reality

One of the coolest additions to Pokémon Classic, however, is Mew. As most Pokémon fans will know, there was a long-standing rumour that Mew could be found under a truck in Vermilion City. It could be found near the S.S. Anne.

It was said that if you could move the truck, you could catch Mew, but obviously, this was just a hoax.

Not in Pokémon Classic, though. If you track down that same truck, something may actually happen…

Now we’re sure you’d like to spend another 100+ hours in Pokémon Pokopia right now, especially if you bought the Expansion Pass.

However, with the next DLC not due until later in the year, we’d encourage you to take your time and enjoy what the new expansion offers without rushing.
