Mass Effect is getting a surprise return in 2027, although the announcement is unlikely to provide much comfort to fans still reeling from BioWare's closure.
It's been just over two weeks since Electronic Arts shut down the beloved RPG developer on October 21, bringing development on the next Mass Effect game to an abrupt end and costing around 400 employees their jobs (50 staff members were left at BioWare, with the remaining 350 being cut across the rest of EA).
The loss hit particularly hard given the game's long wait, the first tease for the seriesâ return in 2020, whilst a leaked trailer a couple of days later in October, offered a glimpse at what was reportedly called Mass Effect Universe. With N7 Day approaching on November 7, fans had little reason to expect a major announcement.
However, a new project connected to the sci-fi franchise has now been confirmed for 2027. Whilst it sadly isnât the unexpected sequel many would be hoping for, it will revisit the people who created the series and uncover how their studio reached such an unfortunate ending.
BioWare's final years are the subject of a new 2027 documentary

As first reported by Deadline, Mass Effect is set to be featured in Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is a documentary directed by Akash Sherman and produced by Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie. Commissioned by Canada's Super Channel, the film will have a world premiere and even a film festival run planned for next year.
The biggest twist, however, is that filming actually began two years before the studio closed, meaning the production was already underway when BioWare's final chapter unfolded.
The documentary will trace the company's 1995 founding through its work not just on Mass Effect, but its other big franchises and specific games Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, ending with the October shutdown.
Interviewees include founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip (who were interestingly newly graduated medical doctors at the time), plus former EA CEO John Riccitiello, Mass Effect director Casey Hudson and Commander Shepard voice actor Jennifer Hale.
The Game Awards and Summer Games Fest creator Geoff Keighley has also confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he took part in the interviews, as well â also confirming the documentary will drop sometime in 2027.
Will the documentary reveal what happened to Mass Effect 5?

Given there now seems to be plenty of time to adjust whatâs shown in the documentary before release, depending on when itâs out in 2027, Massive Effect: The Bioware Story could indeed confirm specifically why Mass Effect 5 was cancelled and why the studio was shut â though thatâs still speculative at the time of writing.
So far, reports have suggested EA chose to prioritise future Star Wars games over a new Mass Effect, whilst the aforementioned leaked Mass Effect Universe trailer and accounts from former developers have intensified frustration over what was lost.
Whatâs more, with so many BioWare and EA insiders confirmed to be involved, itâs almost certain that the documentary will offer rare insight into what could have at least led to the decisions behind the cancellation.
Thatâs more so the case with Sherman acknowledging how the project has taken on a different meaning following the studio's shutdown, stating: âWith the studioâs recent closure, the film is now a profound valediction.â
The news also arrives while the Save Mass Effect petition has passed 300,000 signatures, according to the campaign's organisers, and Amazon's live-action TV adaptation reportedly remains in development.
