The God of War series and IP is undoubtedly one of the most valuable that PlayStation has, and so it's not surprising to hear that they are working on several ways of capitalising on that popularity with the player base.
Those include, at the very least, an adaptation set to debut on Prime Video and a 2D Metroidvania title set in the original Greece that made the series famous in the first place.
Those weren't the only projects in development though, and one cancellation has caused a very mixed response in the community.
As first reported by MP1st, they shared a look at a cancelled God of War multiplayer title that was in development at Bluepoint Games. That game also took us back to Ancient Greece, with several characters including Hades, also set to supposedly feature.

PlayStation supposedly lacked confidence in the game's long-term viability, and so we'll never get to play what Bluepoint Games had planned for us, something that fans cannot agree on whether they're fine with or not.

Multiplayer God of War Is A Controversial Topic
Over on Reddit, one user shared the report on the cancellation of the multiplayer game and it's safe to say that opinions were very divided on whether it's a good thing for the long-term health of the franchise.

"What a massive waste of a good development studios time, resources and expertise in the industry," one comment read.
"Wasting a talented studio’s time on multiplayer garbage. A crying shame." another countered.
A third added, "Wild Sony purchased Bluepoint and their first directive under owning them was "Hey. Make a God of War live service game." And not like "Hey. Do what you did for Shadows of the Colossus and Demons Souls for Jak and Dexter" or something actually neat."
"If FromSoft can put out a multiplayer asset flip game and fans call it experimental and defend it, then I can say that I wish I had seen this game come out," another said.

It is obviously true that a multiplayer live service game is a totally different proposition, bringing massive ongoing costs with it that may have caused Sony to panic. That said, the earlier comment is write that it seems a huge waste of a talented developer's time and resources, particularly when they have such a stellar track record with single-player releases.
In any case, it's all a bit of a moot point now, so we'll just have to sit tight until the TV series drops.
