Steam users who’ve been enjoying Hollow Knight: Silksong are going to love this latest freebie.
Hollow Knight: Silksong surprised us all last month with its launch after so many years of waiting. Seriously it got so bad that people were convinced the sequel was some sort of bizarre social experiment that was never actually coming out.
It’s finally with us though and fans got so excited that they…finished it. Players in its launch week reported they’d already finished the game in record time, and now they have to wait for yet another sequel.
If that sounds like you then might I recommend a new metroidvania to play, Constance, which just so happens to have a free demo on Steam right now.

I played Constance at this year’s Gamescom like many other attendees and from the screenshots and gameplay alone it should be pretty clear how Hollow Knight inspired it. That’s not a criticism either, as while Metroid and Castlevania gave us the metroidvania genre, Hollow Knight took it and perfected it, which is why the sequel was so hyped up.
Constance is a little more down to Earth than Hollow Knight though. No bugs, no lands in need of saving, only Constance herself who’s going through some hard times.
The game’s description says it’s a “2D hand-drawn action adventure featuring a paintbrush-wielding artist, striving to escape from a colorful but decaying inner-world, created by her declining mental health.”
I think we can all emphasise with this character as while we’re all different people and all do different jobs I’m sure we’ve all reached a point in our life where it felt like our passion was wavering.

Constance tells a story of mental wellbeing wrapped up in a tight metroidvania package and it was very, very fun.
Its themes all tie into the gameplay too, as even the save and rest points, simply benches in the Hollow Knight games, see Constance meditate as she tries to overcome her negative feelings and keep moving forward.
The painting mechanic is also good fun, not only being a tool to dispatch enemies with but also a way of progressing, as harmful substances with a bit of paint slapped on them become platforms for Constance to use.
It’s a very clever game and it’s a shame we’re still over a month from its release date. However I’d urge you to check out the demo and add it to your wishlist as I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.
