Naughty Dog creative director and co-president Neil Druckmann has confirmed that a story outline for The Last Of Us Part III has already been written, but stresses a third game is not yet in active development.

Speaking on the Script Apart podcast (via IGN), Druckmann teased that a vague outline of where the story goes following the events of The Last Of Us Part II exists, and added that he'd like to turn it into a game at some stage. You can check out our thoughts on the divisive second game in the series below.

"I don't know how much I want to reveal," Druckmann said, adding that he and co-writer Halley Gross did write an outline for a story. "I hope one day it can see the light of day - that explores a little bit what happens after this game. We'll see."

Druckmann also implied that Naughty Dog hasn't quite decided on what its next project will be yet. He teased it could be The Last Of Us Part III, but stressed that nothing is set in stone at this stage.

"After we finish one of our big titles, we take a long time to explore different ideas, whether it's going to be The Last of Us III, whether it's something new, whether there's some old franchise we want to go back to," he said.

According to a recent reports, at least some of the staff at Naughty Dog are currently working on a PlayStation 5 remake of the original The Last Of Us.There are also rumours that Uncharted 5 is in development at the studio, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

The Last of Us Part II

Given the huge critical and commercial success of The Last Of Us Part II, which is officially the most-awarded game in history, I'd be amazed if we didn't see a third - and maybe final - chapter in the next few years.

As for where a third game could go? Well Naughty Dog has plenty of options. Obviously most of us would probably like to see Abby make a return, but it might also be nice to give Ellie a shot a redemption following the decidedly dour note we left her on in the last game. Let's wait and see.
