Steam drops early free taste of 2027 indie with breathtaking award-nominated visuals

Steam users can pick up a free taster for an upcoming indie game that was nominated for its breathtaking visuals.

Developed by Error Thing as the studio’s debut title, Deperson is a psychological horror adventure game that blends reality with the surreal nightmares of the lead protagonist, Aaron.

Aaron is a regular person who wakes up in a world where obedience is survival. As his two worlds cross over, we come to learn that he isn’t just running from a regime, but fleeing something much worse.

The gameplay of Deperson plays out like a classic point-and-click adventure game, with environmental puzzles, platforming, and character-specific abilities coming into use as you navigate each set piece.

Decisions that you make throughout the story will shape Aaron in how he’s presented, as well as where his story goes. It’ll affect his path, as well as the other characters that he comes into contact with.

These choices will also affect the ending of the game, so it’s important to think carefully about the choices you make as you make them, in case you accidentally land on a path you don’t want to.

Error Thing has now released a new demo for Deperson, allowing you to experience the game’s opening chapter. A previous demo has been available since 2024, but this one has been updated according to feedback and features new content not seen in a playable slice before.

Deperson has already won two awards, months before its release

PARCO GAMES

Earlier this year, Deperson earned recognition at two of the most prominent international game showcases. It became a finalist at the Gamescom Awards 2026 in the Best Visuals category, and was also nominated for Excellence in Art at the Busan Indie Connect Festival 2026.

“Deperson is nominated for Best Visuals on Gamescom and just being next to the games we are fans of in this category is crazy. LIKE HOW??? This must be a dream and we’re going to wake up any minute??? WE ARE SO HAPPY AND HONORED!!” the developer wrote at the time of receiving the award.

Other games nominated for Best Visuals at Gamescom include Alien: Isolation 2, Forza Horizon 6, Inkblood, and Metro 2039, with the latter entry winning the category overall.

Deperson doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it’s planned for release in Q2 2027 for PC.

We didn’t check out Deperson at Gamescom, but we did see a lot out there that got us excited about the next 12 months.

On the same calibre as Deperson, we really liked what we saw of the creepy crime thriller About Fishing, as well as the charming Hades-like action game Murals. On a bigger scale, we also really enjoyed Tides of Annihilation, and were also fond of everything we got to see in our hands-on of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
