Dead Space fans will feel right at home with this new free Steam demo

Dead Space fans know all too well just how hard it is to hold onto a crumb of hope in seeing a brand new game, but luckily there are plenty of games coming out which are at least inspired by the horror series.

Echo 9’s throwback low-poly visuals and first-person perspective don’t necessarily scream Dead Space, but the vibes are very much inspired here.

It’s a game set on a failing shuttle that is lost in deep space. You play as Yaon, a maintenance android who must navigate the ship, stabilise the dying reactor, and reach the evacuation point.

The game is more of an atmospheric adventure into the unknown rather than one filled with action and combat. With no weapons and no chases, it’s more about feeling the weight of the odds as you try to reach safety.

During the game, you’ll have to pilot the shuttle through debris fields, then stabilise the failing reactor, before finally maintaining the stasis pod of the last human aboard the ship, Eva.

Echo 9 also uses a text-based terminal for diagnostics and communication, where you have to prioritise actions which take the most importance. Time isn’t on your side, after all, so it’s imperative for you and Eva to reach the evacuation point in one piece.

In case you fancied checking it out, Echo 9 now has a free demo for you to play on Steam, giving you a smaller taster of what the full experience will be like.

Although the demo doesn’t go into it, the full game will also have multiple endings, with the one you receive being determined by your choices.

There’s no release date set yet for Echo 9, but considering there’s now a demo, I’d imagine it probably won’t be that far off. The fact it’s also supposedly a pretty short experience also points to it having a rather short development time.

There are plenty of excellent smaller-scale games on the way over the next few months
