Red Dead Redemption 2 players brand free new Mexico expansion a 'masterpiece' and 'epic'

A “masterpiece” of a new experience is now available to download on PC for Rockstar Games’ acclaimed action-adventure Red Dead Redemption 2.

Following its reveal in August, the player-made ‘Nuevo Paraíso - The Forgotten Frontier’ expansion has arrived on NexusMods - and it’s very much living up to the hype.

The free fan-made DLC expansion delivers precisely what Rockstar Games hasn’t: new single-player content for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Created by NexusMods user Rixus724, ‘Nuevo Paraíso - The Forgotten Frontier’ permits Red Dead Redemption 2 players to access Mexico, a locale which isn’t accessible in the base game.

Those who have played the original Red Dead Redemption will know the location, of course, although Nuevo Paraíso has been updated here to reflect that it’s now 1907.

The mod expansion went down a storm when GAMINGbible shared its original trailer last month so it’s basically our duty to remind you that the mod is now available.

While some players are experiencing bugs and glitches, that’s perhaps to be expected with an ambitious release of this size; Rixus724 is hard at work responding to all feedback.

For the most part, though, high praise is pouring in.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating this masterpiece of a mod. Actually, let's call it an expansion pack, [because] that's what this mod is,” wrote one very happy player.

Another wrote, “Epic mod, guys. Really cool,” while someone called it “the greatest extension for RDR2, and the most faithful to the spirit of this game you could do”.

Within ‘Nuevo Paraíso - The Forgotten Frontier’, PC players will get to explore three regions of Nuevo Paraíso, all powered by Red Dead Redemption 2’s version of the RAGE engine.

“From towns brought back from RDR1 to an expanded landscape featuring new wildlife and vegetation that breathe life and detail into the controversial state of Nuevo Paraíso, a wide variety of activities await to keep you busy as you traverse this forgotten frontier,” begins the mod’s description.

“It's 1907. Mexico is a land of breathtaking landscapes, but the foundations of an armed conflict are taking shape. Government oppression, military control, poverty, and growing unrest push the country closer to the revolution that will eventually reshape Nuevo Paraíso.”

Diez Coronas, Perdido, and Punta Orgullo are the three main regions you can explore.

Diez Coronos is listed as the “wildest” region with tricky terrain and dangerous predators. It’s here that you’ll also find important military strongholds and bandit camps.

The most “desolate” region is Perdido, which makes it a prime location for smuggling and ambushes.

Punta Orgullo, on the other hand, is known for its beauty and deep canyons. It’s packed with ranches, camps, and military patrols and is considered “the heart of the growing revolutionary conflict”.

Escalera, Chuparosa, Casa Madrugada, and Las Hermanas are some of the restored towns you can visit, all of which should feel bursting with life and detail.

New wildlife species have been added to Mexico’s remote regions, plus the mod introduces a railroad system which connects Nuevo Paraíso with New Austin for ease of movement - and yes, there are several stations along the route.

As alluded to earlier, the mod is packed with activities including treasure hunts, bounty hunting, bartending, safe houses, smuggler jobs, fort defence, taxi jobs, stable jobs, and more.

There are plenty of locations you can explore off the beaten path, just as you can in the base game experience, to unlock cool rewards.

You can rob trains, trade with vendors, unearth Easter eggs, clear out bandit camps and gang hideouts … the world is really your oyster.

Again, do keep in mind that the creator is working hard to fix any technical hiccups that arise, plus we’re hoping not to see this mod hit with a DMCA takedown following the reveal of Rockstar’s new mod rules.

By all accounts, ‘Red Dead Redemption 3’ may not be Rockstar Games’ next project.

It’s perhaps apt then that the next best thing has arrived in ‘Nuevo Paraíso - The Forgotten Frontier’.
