God of War Laufey pre-orders hint at PlayStation already partially phasing out discs

From January 2028, PlayStation will no longer offer physical copies of its new games, instead opting for digital only.

It will continue to offer physical copies of its pre-existing titles, although a production drop of around 10 percent is expected.

For now, that means that physical copies remain an option for consumers, but the opening of pre-orders for God of War Laufey has revealed that Sony is already slightly pulling back.

Following the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey is the second major first-party PlayStation release in a row not to offer a physical collector’s edition.

It was Twitter/X user TheMattEffect_ who made the observation.

“Well, looks like PlayStation have completely retired collectors editions on top of their push to go all digital,” he wrote.

“I am so excited for their team’s games but I have never felt more disconnected to them as a fan. No edition for Wolverine and now Laufey.”

Both Marvel’s Wolverine and God of War Laufey offer physical and digital copies, and the digital line-up for both includes a deluxe option.

However, collector’s editions are pretty important to those of us who prefer physical copies.

Very few who prefer physical always opt for collector’s editions, but it’s nice to pick up those for your favourite franchises.

It’s not as if they’re alien concepts to Insomniac Games and Santa Monica Studio. Both Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök launched collector’s editions featuring both a physical copy of the game and merch items.

God of War Laufey will likely drop a themed DualSense controller further down the line, but that’s probably about the best fans can hope for.

“I was hoping for at least a beautiful DualSense controller, but getting absolutely nothing collectible for their first party teams except for the occasional third party merch support is frustrating,” replied ChristButNot.

“Yeah I really hoped Wolverine not having one was just a blip. I was P R A Y I N G on a Laufey collector's edition. Not giving that Jotun a statue is criminal,” added Leon_NotKennedy.

A collector’s edition could be announced further down the line, but considering that Marvel’s Wolverine didn’t get one, it’s perhaps safer to air on the side of caution.

If you order the digital deluxe version, you’ll also get the Dark Alchemy armor set, Dark Alchemy blade, Dark Alchemy bow scale, Dark Alchemy catalyst, an in-game resource pack, a digital mini art book, and the official God of War Laufey soundtrack.

It looks like Santa Monica Studio has cooked up a treat with this one, with God of War Laufey ours to enjoy on February 16, 2027.
