Make no mistake, Fortnite WILL shut down and you WILL lose all the money you've spent

One day, Fortnite will die and take all of your hard-earned and paid-for cosmetics with it.

Some of the latest happenings in the game industry have had us thinking about the future, and Nintendo’s latest shutdown sets a worrying example for live-service games like Fortnite.

It’s been a terrible couple of weeks for gamers as companies are making it abundantly clear that nothing lasts forever, and there’s always a higher price to pay for whatever comes next.

We've had PlayStation ushering in the end of physical media, Xbox culling studios just to make a lacklustre Fallout game, and now Nintendo shelving one of its live-service games.

The latter is especially worrying as Nintendo has stated it’ll provide no offline alternative for those who want to continue playing after the servers are taken down.

It’s got us thinking about the future of live-service games as a whole, because like it or not they’re all going to be gone eventually, even Fortnite according to analysts.

For titles like Epic Games’ battle-royale that’s a pretty big deal considering how much money fans have invested into it.

Gamers will lose everything when Fortnite shuts down, no hope of reimbursement

Live-service games live or die by their microtransactions, and while players don’t need to purchase cosmetic skins and other useless in-game goodies, they’re always encouraged to.

It’s the fear of missing out that drives sales. When the new Tung Tung Tung Sahur skin lands in the Fortnite item shop the majority of gamers will likely turn their noses up at it, but some will add it to their digital wardrobe just to be part of the fun/memes.

While Epic Games is slowly reintroducing skins that were previously locked within past battle-passes, there’s a large supply of cosmetics that basically act like lost media. There was even a time where people were selling their Fortnite accounts because they had rare or unobtainable skins on them.

Playing dress up before jumping off the battle-bus is all part of the fun, but Mario Kart Tour being taken down with no replacement/alternative is proof that this multiplayer experience is fleeting.

Obviously it’s not going to be anytime soon as Fortnite isn’t short on ideas for collaborations and new seasons, but one day the servers will be taken offline, and your Sabrina Carpenter or Spider-Man skin will go with it.

The X user nin10doland put it best earlier today, July 9, when they made a post saying “Fortnite shutting down eventually is gonna be like losing your lifetime savings for some people.”

Just because you’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands, on skins it doesn’t mean they’re actually yours. If Epic Games announces that Fortnite will be shut down tomorrow you’re not going to get any reimbursement for all the money you’ve spent on its game, in the same way PlayStation or Xbox won’t pay you for all the digital games you’ll lose when their servers are struck down.

Make no mistake, Fortnite’s days are numbered. It might not happen for another 20 years, of course, but as PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo are all proving in their own way, nothing lasts forever anymore.
