The Fast X video game has been officially announced and it’s available to play today, for free!

Yes, that’s right, from today you can play the officially licensed tie-in to the 10th Fast & Furious movie arriving in cinemas later this month.

This action-packed family film sees the return of Vin Diesel, Brie Larson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, John Cena, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren and more. We’re even treated to Aquaman star, Jason Momoa.

The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the most popular movie products of all time, which is why sequels will continually be spawned. According to CBR.com, the franchise has made a whopping $6.62 billion at the box office.

Unfortunately, the Fast & Furious movie video game counterparts haven't shared the same level of success. In 2020, we saw the release of Fast & Furious Crossroads, published by Bandai Namco and developed by Slightly Mad Studios.

Releasing on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Fast & Furious Crossroads was a massive flop, scoring as low as 35 from critics and 1.7 from fans on Metacritic. As a consequence of its woes, within two years of its release, this commercial flop was pulled from sale, never to be seen again.

The poor quality of Fast & Furious Crossroads was especially baffling, considering it was developed by the studio that brought us the PROJECT CARS series. Though to be fair, even the best of studios can have failings, as proven by Arkane’s recent release, Redfall.

So surely, this movie franchise will not repeat history with another commercial flop, right? Well, no, it won’t and there’s a good reason why. The Fast X video game is a totally free browser game of the most basic level.

This browser game simply requires the player to move a vehicle left and right, avoiding obstacles and collecting power-ups along the way, all while trying to achieve a high score. It’s not a great game, but it's free and I suppose it’s better than a poke in the eye with a stick. Probably.

In related news, Vin Diesel compared the Fast & Furious franchise to J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Yes, really.

Fast X releases in cinemas on 19 May 2023.
