Far Cry fans may have just been given a devastating update regarding the next game in the franchise, according to a new report.

Ubisoft is yet to formally announce a new Far Cry game following the mixed reception to Far Cry 6 and its DLC expansions. However, rumours regarding the content of the next game have been floating around since 2021.

With it now being five years since the last game in the series was released, fans have been wondering what the status of the next Far Cry game is. These games are often made rather quickly on a three-year cycle, after all.

Speaking on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Tom Henderson gave Far Cry fans a devastating update, saying that “Far Cry is going through hell and back,” and that the next entry in the franchise was supposed to be released this year.

In the same breath, Henderson also commented on other projects at Ubisoft that he’d heard about, hinting at the status of other games in the works.

“The next big game by Ubisoft after Black Flag [Resynced], if all goes well, is Ghost Recon. I don't think we're seeing Splinter Cell until next year.”

Henderson also added that the Rayman Legends remake is “going well”, however didn’t offer any more insight beyond that.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Henderson’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt, considering there has been no official comments from Ubisoft on the matter.

The Far Cry franchise consists of six mainline games, released between 2004 and 2021, as well as one standalone expansion, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and a few spin-off games.

Every mainline game typically has a spin-off game released for it a year or two after the fact, but Far Cry 6 received no such treatment.

With rumours that Far Cry 7 may be in “development hell”, it seems that it may be a while yet before we see the next game in the franchise.

However, with many fans accusing the Far Cry games of being repetitive and using the same formula for each new entry, taking some time off may prove to be beneficial for Ubisoft.
