Some of the best Fallout games came before the monumental launch of Fallout 3 which arguably brought the series to a larger audience by shifting from an isometric RPG into a 3D, first-person action RPG. The original games built out the universe we know now, with all the aesthetics we’ve become used to.

Next week, Fallout and Fallout 2 will become free games on Epic Games Store along with the spin-off Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel. The original two games, originally released in 1997 and 1998 respectively introduced us to the unique world of post-apocalyptic America.

Why not dip into these Fallout classics while waiting for the TV show?

Don’t let the retro graphics put you off; yes, they’re a bit of an eyesore nowadays, but the story underneath is just as engaging as any we’ve seen in the more modern Fallout titles. All the deadpan humour, sly satire, and recognisable tropes are here. It’s a very different kind of Fallout with turn-based battles rather than fast-paced action, and you can expect these to be a bit more story-heavy than more recent additions as these retro RPGs were always bursting with lore.

If you’re a fan of the overall feel of the Fallout games, you have to try these. Developed by Black Isle Studios, before Bethesda took over development duties, all the seeds are laid here that eventually grow into those wonderful moments you have grown fond of.

Given that we’re still some years away from Fallout 5, this is a great way to hold you over and will get you in the mood for the upcoming Amazon Prime TV show that debuts in April.

All you need to claim these freebies is an Epic Games Store account. They’ll be available for just one week from 22 February until 29 February. These replace the current free game, Dakar Desert Racing which you can grab over the next week.
